Music

At Holy Family we aim for our pupils to appreciate different musical styles and traditions from across the world. We aspire for them to take a creative and active approach to music, taking part in singing, performing, listening and composing. We encourage pupils to take music as a hobby, or even a career.

We follow the Sing Up Music curriculum for primary schools. This is used as a foundation to deliver a creative and engaging programme to allow pupils to obtain the skills, knowledge and understanding set out in our music learning ladder.

The Sing Up curriculum provides opportunities for pupils through different units of Sing, Listen, Compose and Play each long term.

We also very much encourage singing opportunities wherever possible, in accordance with our status as a Gold standard singing school. Weekly singing assemblies encourage every child in the school to songs of different styles and around the world, and our choir take part in termly events around the community.

Things to Share and Celebrate

At Holy Family, we offer a rich and varied music provision as part of our curriculum. Singing is a real strength across the school and is regularly praised by parents and parishioners. Whole-school singing assemblies take place weekly, and each year group receives a dedicated hour of music teaching every week. In addition, pupils enjoy numerous opportunities to perform throughout the year, including Class Masses, Church Masses and other liturgical celebrations, where our singing truly shines.

What’s on Offer?

  • Guitar lessons are available for pupils in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

  • Piano lessons are available for pupils in Years 1–6.

  • Choir Club takes place on Wednesday lunchtimes and is open to KS2 pupils.

Letters are sent out in July for parents to express interest in music tuition for their child. This information is also shared via Class Dojo, so families are encouraged to keep an eye out for updates.

Plans for the Future

We would like to:

  • Investigate ways to expand access to live music experiences.

  • Celebrate pupils’ learning in new and exciting ways.
