Welcome to our CAFOD assembly. Today we will be telling you about the BIG Lent walk.

What is Lent? (Ask 3 people)

Lent is the period from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. This is where Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus.

As you heard in the CAFOD National assembly last Friday, we are trying to help people like Dristy. https://youtu.be/SRwnKGlwCvQ 

Dristy is in our global family, we should help her and others gain a better lifestyle without any danger around.

To help with this, we are going to take part in the BIG Lent walk. We will be walking together as a whole school, each of us walking a 1 mile individually. These will be added together to complete the distance of the BIG Lent Walk as school.

We will be doing this walk with hundreds of other Catholic schools around the country as well as other members of the Catholic faith.

By taking part in this walk, we are demonstrating part of our mission statement as we are helping others.

This also links to Catholic Social Teaching because of Family and Community we are helping others in our community. It also links with Option for the Poor and Vulnerable as it CAFOD is aiming to help fight poverty.

By taking part we are helping those less fortunate than us and in poverty. People in poverty are people who have less money than us and who have a lack of food and water.

We have a chance to help hundreds of people have a healthier life so let’s make this fantasy become a reality.

We will be doing this walk as a whole school on the 14^th March at 1.30pm. Please encourage your parents to come too!

Every step we take will be a gift to someone.

At the end of the day your teacher will give you a sticker with a QR code on it so you can scan it and find out more about the BIG Lent walk.

Dear Lord,

You dream of a world where we all have the things we need to live – housing, food, clothing, and education.

Help us fight for a world where we all have what we need.

Thank you for all we have.

Help us share what we don’t need with those who have less than us.

Help us never be selfish with what we have and with what we can give.

Comfort people whose lives are difficult because they don’t have what they need.

We ask this in the name of your Son, who offers comfort and love to all. Amen.

This Lent CAFOD are inviting schools to take part in The BIG Lent Walk!

Following the success of CAFOD’s ‘Walk for Water’ and ‘Walk against Hunger’ appeals, we have decided as a school to support CAFOD’s ‘BIG Lent Walk’ 202 Len3ten appeal.  

“CAFOD's Lent walking challenge is back, and this year it's the Big Lent Walk! We are very excited and would love for you to join us as we walk to help fight global poverty.”

Why join the BIG Lent Walk?

This Lent CAFOD is supporting families with the skills and tools they’ve asked for to fight the climate crisis.

In Bangladesh, 14 year old Dristy and her Mum Rupali are building seed beds and planting palm trees to protect their crops form flooding and cyclones.

“It’s not right if I always have food on my table, yet my neighbour barely has anything to eat. I will stay well, I will keep my environment well, and I need to fight to help the people who are around me too. When they are all in a good place, the entire village will be in a good place.” Rupali

On Friday 3^rd March, the whole school watched the National Assembly presented by CAFOD which introduced their focus for this Lent. To find out more about the CAFOD ‘BIG Lent Walk’ and the reasons behind it, the link to the national assembly is:

CAFOD is challenging people to walk 200km this Lent. That’s a long walk for one person, but we are planning to do it together as a school. With all the children, staff and any parents who wish to join us, I am positive we can cover this distance together, if not further!

The Chaplaincy team have worked hard to plan a walk for the whole school to take part in, leaving the school at 1.30pm on Tuesday 14^th March and walking to Little Stoke Park, around the park and back to school. If any parents can come and support us in person on this afternoon, walking with us, please let your child’s teacher know on your class dojo. The more people we have the greater distance we can walk together!

To support this, the school have set up an Enthuse donation page which will send any money donated directly to CAFOD, enabling them to provide help to those needing food around the world. Anything that you can spare would be greatly appreciated.

Good morning,

As you all know Tuesday afternoon the whole school walked around Little Stoke part. Each person walking 2.21km in support of CAFOD. CAFOD’s Lenten Appeal this year was entitled ‘The BIG Lent Walk’. We are incredibly proud of the children, for not only completing the 2.21km walk but for doing this with smiles on their faces and willingness in their hearts! (As you saw on the video posted by Mr. Harding) Thank you to all of the adults who came and supported us during this walk too.

Totalling up the distance that we walked altogether, we covered 528.19km! What a amazing amount!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for the kind and generous donations that you have given in support of the school and CAFOD. It is very much appreciated and will help towards fighting global poverty. With your support and the children’s dedication to walking, we have managed to raise a staggering .......... £440!

This is not only an amazing amount in support of those in need, but has exceeded the amount raised last year for CAFOD’s annual Lenten appeal. WELL DONE!

On Thursday 22nd June 2023, Rose visited Holy Family to lead an assembly and thank us for the money that we have raised for CAFOD over the years. She told us about what the money had been used for and how we have helped many people around the world.

We have added photographs of the assembly below.

Since then, we have already signed up for the BIG Lent Walk 2024!
