We enjoyed a fantastic day out today, in and around Bristol's historic Harbourside! After learning about Isambard Kingdom Brunel last term, we were really excited to see his famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and the SS Great Britain for real! Then we sailed 'there and back' along the River Avon on The Matthew. This replica ship is similar to that which John Cabot sailed in when he discovered America in 1497. We learnt about life aboard ship and more about the pirates that later terrorised the Carribean. The children impressed the crew of The Matthew with their knowledge of Edward Teach (also known as Blackbeard), a famous pirate who grew up in Bristol. We then set off on a pirate trail which took us to some of the most famous pirate haunts in Bristol. We saw caves, tunnels, hostelries, and houses, all with links to Bristol's pirating past! Not only did we learn so much by visiting these historic sites, but we also walked an impressive 3.5km (just over 2 miles)! An amazing day and the children were a credit to the school.
